Building a career in software engineering is not just about coding ⚡
As you spend more time working in the industry, you will learn and build the following abilities and skill sets. In case you think you lack in a few, work on those explicitly to ensure you have all the squares covered. Here are the seven in my checklist.
- Coding - writing efficient, maintainable, and extensible code.
- Project Management - leading cross-functional projects to completion
- Communication - clear and concise within and across teams
- System Design - zoom out and designing available and scalable systems
- Mentorship and Leadership - help your peers grow and become better
- Staying Organized - not requiring frequent follow-ups or reminders
- Emotional Quotient - be empathetic towards customers and peers
