Many senior engineers and leaders fear that higher pay comes with limited options to switch later, and here’s my take on it…
Yes, higher compensation means you won’t have as many options to choose from, but “fewer” does not mean “none”. As long as you can demonstrate measurable impact, there will always be opportunities at every compensation level.
Companies pay well when they believe you can move the needle.
That is why it is crucial to build a strong track record of work and tangible results. At a higher level, your impact needs to be razor-sharp and clearly aligned with one or more of the following: revenue saved, time reduced, team scaled, or systems built.
If you don’t have a good track record, you’ll likely get stuck.
Also, with fewer opportunities to switch, you’re likely to stay in one place longer. So you need to be extra careful when choosing a company to move to.
Given that hiring a senior leader or engineer comes with a significant cost, companies are highly selective, and multiple short stints at a senior level raise red flags.
As you climb the career ladder, focus on making the right choices. Pick environments where you can thrive, not just survive. It’s okay to take time to make the right switch, but make sure the switch is aligned with your expertise.
As you climb up, you double down on your strengths to compound your impact.
Hope this helps.
